And then he walked along the edge of the Circle

This is the place where we will post your stories about the Green's Playhouse, The Glasgow Apollo and Satelitte City (The Wee Apollo). As it develops we will break the stories up into sections such as Myths, Gigs I missed, Meeting the Bands, Where are they now etc. No story too trivial and we will only edit out bad language!

New Forum structure on Apollomemories soon.

Comments on Van Halen [reply]

If I remember right the support band was going to be Quartz but due to the time it took to get all Van Halens gear set up there was no time for them to play let alone any room for them on the stage. Doors didn't even open until about 9pm but when Van Halen came on about 10pm they played one of the best gigs I've ever seen, and I've seen alot there. [reply]

I was there that night as well.It was a 10 pm start as the rig was so big it couldnt fit the stage .The band where excellent and i was lucky enought o get a Michael Anthoney plectrum that was thrown from the stage Lost it years ago. [reply]

Sorry guys but i cannot agree with either of you.

Dave Lee Roth,s first words when he came staggering onstage with a bottle of Jack Daniels was "Hi England how ya all doin, guys."

That comment went down like a lead balloon, they then performed one of the worst gigs i have ever saw,and a terrible let down compared to two years previously, when they won the hearts of the Apollo faithful by blowing one of my favourite bands,Black Sabbath off stage.

Tony Iommi even admitted he never realised just how good a guitarist Eddie Van Halen was commenting at the time,"Mindblowing,****ing mindblowing man."
[reply]

exactly as you say, the support should have been Lucifers Friend but time said no, Roth was blootered thats all i sadly remember of the gig except for thr wonderfull tora tora/loss of control and the silly bombs on stage, i heard were keyboards but were they props ?? [reply]

I also recall that comment from Roth. He also used the classic crap line - 'we're recording this show for a live album' as he swigged away on what I assume was a bottle of Amerian Cream Soda disguised to us youngsters as Vodka. We're still waiting Dave. Regardless of all his crap antics, the rough sound and the typical short set that Amerian bands thought was acceptable I can say I saw Van Halen at the Apollo. [reply]

yo,,,frank i was at the 1980 gig of van halen, an yes mr.roth was  ****** faced on sour mash whiskey. and he allso used the line about the live recording, like he has done so many times before. i had seen vh state side with blacksabbath as a support act an thet kicked ass,but by the time of the apollo show mr.roth's ego was out of controll.safe to say thats why he is no longer in the band. [reply]

I agree with Tony, I've seen over 100 concerts but this was by far the worst i've been to. Roth was steaming and all he could do was boast about how many chicks he'd f*cked recently, I was in the circle and everyone was sitting down and most of us couldn't wait for the show to finish it was that bad [reply]
