And then he walked along the edge of the Circle

This is the place where we will post your stories about the Green's Playhouse, The Glasgow Apollo and Satelitte City (The Wee Apollo). As it develops we will break the stories up into sections such as Myths, Gigs I missed, Meeting the Bands, Where are they now etc. No story too trivial and we will only edit out bad language!

New Forum structure on Apollomemories soon.

Comments on KISS [reply]

Saw them on one of the unmasked outings. i Remember Tom Russells rockshow voted it gig of the year that year too.I couldnt believe it cos i thought they wre really sh.ite! I remember even then,,laughing out loud at Paul Stanleys"alleged" guitar solo.It kind of consited of him hitting a chord, then moving one finger in time with his tongue. awful. Then the drum solo ws like someone dropping a wardrobe down a flight of stairs for 20 minutes. Really really dreadful.Kiss are one of those bands that i always WANTED to like,,
you know?I like the IDEA of them, rather than like them.IIt was the same night that Bon Jovi were very good as support. I was only there because i was in the roadcrew of local band Glasgow who were around at the time, They had gotten the call from Radio Clyde(261,,altogether now!)to do a support slot.they were all really excited as you can imagine, but that quickly turned to disappointment when they got there and were told that all that would be required would be for the singer and guitarist to stand on the stage and sing 2 songs with an acoustic guitar while the roadies built the stage around them.
it was purely a requirement of he musicians union that a local band play,,otherwise they couldnt record the show i believe. so they got a musiscians union payment for it,but im sure they would rather have got to play. i felt sorry for the lads.So thats why i was there! Now ye know!
Bon Jovi 1-Kiss
Glasgow,,,,,,sent off pre match!

Hey Jim, we have the same second name!!  I saw Kiss when Heavy pettin' were the support and they were of the same "quality" as when you saw them.  The "drum solo" was the best bit as he was mounted on a tacky looking tank gun turret that moved into the centre of the stage.  Those of us in the circle could see the guys behind pushing it!!

Nice to see the boys from Glasgow getting a wee mention, they got conned right enough though.

You 2 are talking  ******e, were you actually at the gig? Kiss were great on the Lick it Up Tour(the one with the Tank and Heavy Pettin/Helix supporting) Bon Jovi supported them on the Animalize tour the following year and they(Jovi) were really ******e.

I was in the circle next to the mixing desk and don't recall seeing roadies pushing the tank nor Paul Stanley using his tounge, are you getting him mixed up with GS?

Nnyway, my bands stageshow is better  than yours etc!!!

Seriously what about Glasgow eh? Mick Boyle - Big Nose, Kelvingrove, Under the lights etc -

Halcyon Days!!

Have to agree with Jim here - the 'unmasked' Kiss shows were brilliant and proved Kiss didn't need the make up to cut it live. As for Glasgow and Mick's big nose - ha ha ha ha !!!! What about Chasar and Henry Gorman and the rest of them from 20 - 25 years ago! [reply]

I was at these gigs... KISS were on fire both nights

PUNKY YOU ARE WRIGHT, I WAS AT THE FRIST KISS SHOW IN MAKE-UP THEY WERE ON FIRE. 2 NEW MEMBERS THE DRUMER & LEAD GUITAR, THE ARMY TANK DRUM KIT WAS PRETTY COOL.WAR MACHINE WAS A NEW SONG THEN IT REALLY ROCKED.I REMBER GOING TO THE FRONT ON THE BASS SOLO, KNOWING GENE SIMMONS "THE DEMON" WAS GOING TO SPIT BLOOD. A BOUNCER TOLD ME TO SIT ME BUM DOWN, I SAID PISS-OFF. WE BOTH LOOKED UP TO THE STAGE TO SEE THE DEMON [G.S.]SPEWING BLOOD FROM  HIS MOUTH, THE BOUNCER SHOOK HIS HEAD AN WALKED AWAY. GREAT SHOW AGAIN,LONG LIVE THE APOLLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [reply]

Hey Punky, never saw yo on the Kiss tour as I only saw them when Bon Jovi Supported on the Animalize tour. This was the first gig I saw by an American band. Kiss were awesome. Blew me away. More so when Paul broke the black guitar up and handed it in 2 parts to the crowd !!! Fantastic Stuff.
I saw you guys at the Barrowlands when you supported. Fantastic gig you guys had. Great sound that night....but hated Romeo....SORRY !! I love Rock Aint Dead. Still play it to this day. Sole Survivor (bought the single as well!!) North Wind. Love the guitars on North Winds. Great vocals as well . I loved the line in the chorus...When The Lightening Strikes...   WOW. Great stuff indeed. Thanx for the memories !!

1984 animalize tour. remember going down on the night and picking up some tickets from some punter whose mates failed to materialize. he sold us a couple for £3 each. nice one. funny thing - i remember seeing kiss arriving outside in black limos. straight in. no fans allowed to go near them. in contrast i went to see maiden and they (apart from bruce "that ******'s taken the train" as steve harris put it) arrived in some plain volvos got out and had a good chat with us all at the backstage entrance.

bon jovi were one of those flash us bands we had all heard about in kerrang but had yet to prove themselves to the uk. i was never a fan but they played well that night. kiss were very entertaining. again, i'm not a fan but it was a great night. remember the guitar destroying moment where stanley smashed one up and gave the body to a fan in the front and the neck to another. not spontaneous i'm afraid as he did the same thing in london. great spectacle nonetheless. got the usual "you guys are the best" from stanley saying the apollo was the best place to play in europe.

I remember camping outside the box office the night before the tickets were due to go on sale for the '83 gig. I actually met them up at the Hilton Hotel and before the gig itself and gave Eric Carr a Scotland scarf which he had tied around his drum kit, and held aloft after his solo.

I thought they were immense the on the LIU tour...they were pretty much a spent force second time round...trust me, I followed most of the UK tour and Glasgow was one of the better gigs!

I'm sure olde Tom Russell's Rock show recorded both gigs.
